Ok - I thought I was crazy when I read this because that IS what happens in the episode.  About 32 minutes in.  She shrinks the van, he makes the Scott quip, and then the owl scoops up the van and flies away.

I just can’t get over that response. It isn’t that common to get investigated by HR, yet the fact that he has gone through three years in a row seems just shrug-worthy to him.

The Goldbergs is definitely set in the 1980's. Garlin may be the biggest name on the cast, but is a pretty minor character in the show. Murray can just be assumed to be watching TV in his underwear and not engaging with anyone and not much will change with the show.
