The S/T reminds me of sped up Modest Mouse. I feel that you can trace its up-tempo, melodic rock to the change-up of indie rock of the late 2000s (leading to Vampire Weekend, MGMT, etc)…

Also, don't trust the Pazz and Jop polls so much. They have fucked up too. Maybe not as many times as the Grammys, but such wonderful artists like Graham Parker and Arrested Development put out album equivalents of a "shower" instead of a "grower."
