I'm going to flagrantly threadjack this now 9-hour-old discussion to see if you one of you movie nerds can help me out. Musicbox is having a Herzog-fest this weekend. If I have to choose one of Nosferatu, Fitzcarraldo, or Aguirre (having seen none of them), which one would you recommend?

I saw it. It was great.

I'm not the target market for Cumberbatch, so what do I know, but the nature of his attractiveness eludes me as well. He's one of those people who, if not famous, wouldn't particularly stand out at a party. Kind of like Matt Damon. Not ugly. Just, you know, a guy. (I grant that his Village of the Damned eyes are

One thing I noticed in the trailer that I thought was kind of funny is that this movie looks fucking awful. It seems like the most painfully literal rendering imaginable of every teenager's "I'm a delicate snowflake nobody understands me stop trying to box me in with all of your rules oh my god this love is so real"

Helpful, thanks.

Yeah, this is the part of the whole thing that is weird to me. I don't care really about Affleck as Batman. It doesn't seem like great casting, but I'm probably not going to see the movie anyway. But Ben Affleck has done a really bang-up job with career/reputation resuscitation. He's practically glowing with reflected

I'm not a horror movie guy either (because they make me shit my pants), but The Conjuring was probably the most fun I've had at the movies this year.

I wouldn't wait. I read the first volume only, and it was fantastic. But, you know, it's about LBJ. You don't get to the end of it and think, "Oh man, what the hell happens next!??!!?!?!?"

I saw it the way it was meant to be seen: I found it on a VHS tape in my parents' bedroom. It had clearly been copied many times, and the tape had all sorts of tracking issues, but the important bits were intact. I swiped it from my folks, but eventually it went missing. I like to think that my brother stole it from

This looks really tough to watch. The trailer was gorgeous and cringeworthy.

I was pretty sure I knew what the word "rustic" means (as in "the rustic hardware of the Alien franchise"), but I looked it up anyway just to make sure: having a simplicity and charm that is considered typical of the countryside.

I just read The Killer Inside Me, which I know often gets held up as his best. I read Pop. 1280 so long ago that its maybe not fair to compare, but I'm pretty sure I prefer Pop. 1280. I remember it being so lean and so disturbing. Definitely worth a read.

I decided to read 1984 in 1984, when I was eleven. In retrospect, I have no idea where I would have even gotten this notion, much less why no one stopped me. It was so far over my head that I'm not sure it really registered, but the rats and the tooth and few other choice scenes are forever lodged in my head.

Actually, my favorite part of this clip — and there's a lot to like — is the look of physical revulsion on David O. Russell's face whenever the host is talking.

Been a long time since I read the story, but I don't recall any girl-getting. Wasn't the point the unbridgeable gap between Mitty's fantasies and reality? (I honestly don't remember.)

Are you kidding? This looks like a shit ton of special effects in the service of a bog standard "put-upon everyman breaks out of office drone routine and gets the girl" plot. Add uplifting soundtrack for extra carpe diem.

It's called metonymy, bitches!

Speaking of interchangeable — I enjoyed Pacific Rim, mainly because it had the good sense to keep the focus on giant robots punching giant monsters, but the climax was Avengers Under The Sea. Interdimensional portal. Nuke. Unconscious hero falling/floating to earth. Cut to schwarma. It's the same shit with every movie

Let's hope this doesn't happen, but if it must, let's hope the move focuses exclusively on Bronson Pinchot.

Saw The Conjuring last night. I dug it. Of course, I'm a girl's blouse and basically spent half the movie with my eyes clamped shut.
