    I really thought the dog was just Ryan's mechanism for doing as he liked and feeling no guilt (I.e., break up his crush's relationship, teach his sister a lesson, etc). It was the self-delusional equivalent of blaming the dog. I'm not sure I am completely over my theory yet.
