I can see a satisfactory flashback to Gale giving the book to Walter that could have been kept until the next episode to lend more shock value to this final scene

The way I interpreted that scene was that she did realize Col. Broyles was involved, was about to report to him (maybe out of some sort of force of habit, since he is her superior), but then thought better of it
