I'm an old as well, but I totally get the Chvrches love. Yes, the vintage synths evoke other 80's artists, but it's refreshing to see techno-pop presented without the silly artifice and unearned pretension of those bands. I feel like Chvrches makes synth pop for actual grownups.
Her intro makes more sense if you watch Chvrches' other video from that night, which was chronologically first. Soledad O'Brien introduced the band and referred to Lauren Mayberry's writings about female artists being subjected to online misogyny:
