I would liken MP3 to JPG and AAC to PNG in my experience with the difference in fidelity.

Absolutely, especially at lower bitrates. I could hear weird phasing artifacts up to 192 kbps with MP3, and AAC sounds clean to me at 160 kbps (possibly even 128, but I never checked).
