When/why did Jane start working at the Marbella again? Guess I missed/forgot about that detail.
I agree that the episode did feel a little sitcom-esque, with the party shenanigans and the professor's-phone detour. But I would argue that this show is still leagues better than the average sitcom because it makes sure those silly plotlines come with dramatic or emotional ramifications, like they did with Xo and…
Man I even read parts of this review, including spoilers about the send-off, before I watched the episode, and my eyes still watered during that scene. I think the additional image of Mack needing an extra moment was the kicker. And I don't think any of that scene was cheesy or heavy-handed at all: it's tough to say…
Doesn't the terrigen kill anyone exposed to it who is not Inhuman? So wouldn't Hunter or Bobbi have died by eating one of the fish pills?
Been waiting for this review to come up since watching the episode last night, so thanks for a great read, Alexa. I agree that the GoT references and critiques were really appropriately relevant to the episode. And I commend the writers for not only executing that tone of suspense so well throughout the entire…
You should definitely try watching the most recent episode. It has Rebecca seeing things from Valencia's point of view, in which Rebecca is the villain (who doesn't automatically deserve Josh's love) and Valencia is the princess (who is helplessly watching as someone tries to steal her boyfriend). I think the show is…
I think I laughed out loud the most during this episode this season. All of the Petra/Jane scenes were sublime—it's awesome how the writers can get so much, both comedic and dramatic, out of their completely contrasting characters. And there were great poignant moments from Jane/Michael and Alba/Xo, too.
This is a great point that I think is slightly underrepresented in this episode. I completely agree that Rafael's feelings are more complicated than just romantic ones for Jane. I really wish they'd had a longer discussion after Rafael says "I don't want to be replaced." First, that is a more real, nuanced emotion…
I am still confused: Jade didn't providing the chapter and was still spending the advance, and legally Empirical could do nothing about it? She must have breached some contract, right? Or am I missing something?
The office scene (and Briga Heelan) can not get enough praises:
"Forget this stupid case, we've got to figure out how to spin this!"
"Nobody does 'opposite day' anymore, Harry! What are we, 4th graders in 1995?!"
"There's only one option here… Witness protection. Burn it all down, start a new life."
My small beef with this episode is that they act like Jane's never been angry before. In "Chapter Twenty," Jane spent the whole episode being angry, but that episode just used the percentile text instead of the CALM tool. I think the JtV writers have to be slightly careful with retreading certain plot points and…
Someone needs to clear this up for me…
I have been under the impression all this time that Gideon Malick is not the same character that Powers Boothe played in The Avengers. But according to other sources, they are in fact the same. When and how was this revealed this on S.H.I.E.L.D., if it was revealed it at all?
I was going to comment the same thing: whatever happened with him and Liv's mom? I hope the show brings that back at some point—having Liv's family turn on her like that is a pretty big gut punch that she can't just ignore.
Alex's two moments—with his mom and with his profile—were definitely my favorites from this episode. I don't know exactly how much I liked Valerie's scene with the guy; the transition from anger to honesty didn't necessarily feel the most organic. But it was still a good Valerie moment in general.
As I think about it more, there were moments of overkill in this episode. Some little things that I personally remember:
– The cutaways to Michael and Rafael's "Bachelorette" confessionals. I realize they meant to continue the gag, but for some reason, that part felt like too much.
– The slo-mo replay of Rafael's…
One other thing I loved was that Scott's contact on Petra's phone was "Scott (vests)." If only for that other little funny bit, it was worth it.
I agree that Alba's moment was still powerful regardless of whether or not Xo was actually in the room. I think it's too much to ask that every milestone in the Villanueva women's lives involves all three of them present every time; it feels actually kind of realistic that Xo had to miss this one, but could still at…
Luisa's first interaction with Lachlan was hilarious too, and "Rick!" at the end was just the cherry on top. Luisa's parts were really the funniest overall from the whole episode
Agreed. She was always one of the funnier presences on the show, and it looks like they may be tying her much more into the main plot this season
