I'm pretty sure you're right. It kinda feels slightly more plausible in that it was just a random nearby house, and therefore even more of an obscure brain pull for Marty. Not sure how realistic it is to photo a whole neighborhood while canvasing, but then I would never have entered Carcosa w/out my partner.
