I think they gave Walt a bit of light and shade in this episode too - to try to avoid a "team Walt" v "team Jess/Guss/Mike" situation.
I think having the flashback scene to Gus's past (which some people thought was uneccesary) totally paid off this episode. The scene took on so much more because you knew what had happened there.
