Someone down below also mentioned lack of empathy, which I think is definitely another major factor.
My theory is that art, or at least good art, requires introspection and an ability to question your own beliefs/opinions/worldview in order to create and grow. Conservatives by nature are unable to do this because they're conditioned to believe their old-fashioned ways are completely immutable.
