No, there is no requirement to introduce such a list with a colon.  It is a matter of personal preference.  In this context, it would have been totally stilted to do so.  The point is clarity, and the use of punctuation in the sentence at issue made things perfectly clear.

Yes, it is an appropriate use of a semi-colon.  Semi-colons can be used to separate phrases in a series, where commas within the phrases make it confusing to use commas to separate the items.  I think that is what ThisGuyRightHere is saying, but it is confusing because he starts off with a "No" (which I guess is

The ironic thing is that Southwest is the LEAST family-oriented of all the major airlines.  For example, it is the only one I know of that doesn't give families priority in boarding.  My impression is that Southwest does NOT want kids flying (because they are more demanding and inconvenient passengers), so it should

The worst thing about this is the websites won't be integrated, so if there is a movie I want to see I have to go to one place and search and add it if it is there or then go check the other site.  This company deserves to go out of business.  But what are the best alternatives for discs and streaming?  I'm assuming

Little correction.  As I heard it, he said that the Star Trek girls "were prettier," not that, re the Star Wars girls, "and they were pretty."  So he didn't even give the Star Wars franchise that.

Obviously the attacks are not phrased as attacks on women in general, but the tone and choice of words and types of attacks is very revealing about the double standards that still exist.  I think it was broadly accepted that the attacks on Obama's citizenship were racist because the particular attacks (and words used)

Whatever.  I see the delight people take in
attacking Madonna and it is clear to me they wouldn’t be making the same
attacks or especially using the same loaded and demeaning terms about
some guy who was an arrogant jerk that slept around a lot.  I’m astounded looking at the comments to this
post.  Empowered women are a

Creepy, as in, I think you're kind of a creep if the best you can do is mean-spirited comments like these, and if you take so much pleasure in it.  Lame.

Nice try to recast the comment after the fact, but I think it speaks for itself.  Sure, it is fair game to poke fun at Madonna for lots of reasons, but to my mind the comment, with its overwhelming focus on AGE (leathery "old" wallet "that's been baked in a coal-fired oven for the last twenty years"), crosses the

Thank you for your common sense and lack of snarkiness.  I was suffocating on the self-satisfied mean-spirited not so cleverness in the room.

I know I am out of sync with the apparent purpose of the AV Club forum being people trying to out-clever one another and refuse to leave any serious or substantive comments (despite the AV Club critics being some of the most insightful around).  But, even so, your comment is mean-spirited and sexist.  I don't care

Vampire On Titus is great
I'm not sure I'd call Alien Lanes or Under The Bushes Under The Stars great, but Vampire On Titus is NOT the record that keeps GBV from meeting the 5 records test.

Moment = Less than 15 minutes
She's not so far off, it's not like this song is called "my year" or "my career."

"Ask" isn't really a "summer-y" song. This is the closest it gets in the lyrics: "Spending warm summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in luxembourg"
To the extent the song has anything to do with summer (which it doesn't, really), it is more of an anti-summer song than a "summer-y" song.

Thank you for posting a first that is actually a comment (albeit brief) on the substance of the story, instead of an inane joke.

Unfortunately, he wasn't joking
The problem is that Von Trier wasn't really joking. Sure, some of his comments were straight up jokes, and he certainly didn't mean to suggest that he agreed with any of the Nazi policies, but he wasn't joking in saying that he "understood" and "sympathized" with Hitler. If you watch

It seems to me that this news increases the likelihood of a Magnum appearance at the Elephant 6 shows this spring (I have tix for the SF show). At least it means he is emerging from his shell somewhat.

It's fantastic this material is becoming available for streaming online. It's annoying it is through Hulu plus instead of Netflix. It is not in the consumer's interest for this stuff to be spread all over, and have to decide whether to join 2-3 streaming sites. And they say that capitalism leads to efficiencies.

Brilliant
This actually seems like a totally brilliant move to me.

I'm not feeling it
In my opinion, a lot of the other recent shoegaze/ noise pop bands are a lot more interesting than Weekend. And I'm from San Francisco.
