I think the Peter-Olivia romance is a necessary ornament for the show, although it may seem tedious in rewatch - I don't know.  I hated the idea of the two characters being forced together back in Season 2 ("see man… see woman… instant LURVE"), but to the show's great credit, the situations they were put through later…
