Peter firing the gun was never explained and I think it was left as a provocative mystery point.

Walter never asked anyone to help him with HIS brain surgery (last season, the self-lobotomy).  Like father, like son.

Maybe Peter is the progenitor of the gentle, scientific, curious Observers (September and the gang) - who seem to have human tendencies.  Perhaps Peter was saved because he was important that way; but then, the orders changed and the bad Observers wanted him erased from time?

I didn't see it so much as Peter being arrogant, but it was the way he taunted the Observer in grief and anger - "If I had your tech I'd be a thousand times more powerful than you" - that reminded me that… ever since almost the *very start* of the show… Peter has been OBSESSED with the Observers.  His encounter with

I actually didn't expect Peter to torture the Observer, if only because we've seen several instances of him over the years playing interrogator, and (aside from Season 1) he knows how to do it without busting chops.  (See: his interrogation of David Robert Jones last year)

Last week, I was wondering WHAT this season was about.  Now, I understand.  This episode may have saved the season for me.  Not only was the ending spectacular, but the entire rest of the episode was terrific, too.  Observers acting Observery; special effects; kickass action; our characters all acting SMART; and —
