Well, you're encountering one now, because I am one. And I don't think it's that rare. Do you not know anyone who voted for Bernie in the primary who is voting for Clinton in the general? Because the thing you are describing is pretty much everyone in that category.

I mean… 1984? It really wasn't that long ago.

Yes, but Hillary has a version of the same problem on the left. I know we keep hearing about the % of Hillary supporters who weren't going to vote for Obama at this point in the 2008 cycle, but I was paying attention both times, and the vibe from the Bernie people is qualitatively different. I am honestly not sure

I've definitely heard it somewhere. Was it not in the John Oliver thing? I don't feel like rewatching it but not sure where else I'd have heard that joke.

I had to have been in my mid-20s before I realized that Parliament and Funkadelic started as two separate bands, and that early Funkadelic was… not what I was expecting. In the best way possible.

I did get to see it live, and it WAS awesome. I mean, incredibly self-indulgent and weird, but still. Awesome.

I doubt hazing is still tolerated in high school sports to the extent it once was, but freshman soccer hazing for me involved the upperclassmen making us see how far we could slide through a muddy drainage ditch that was also full of goose shit.

Yeah, I know most people will say the "straight line" bit was the part that got them feeling emotional, but that was the part that got me emotional. It distilled a lot of what is great about the show.

People did say dance punk about some of it, Q and Not U for example, but I don't remember anybody calling Franz Ferdinand or The Killers that. Dance rock was much more common.

I was in a really good band in this genre, but we were late to the party (2008-2011) and it never really went anywhere, despite a strong fan base in our home town.

Positives: They were and are loving parents who gave me my intellectual curiosity, my love of food and music, and my general orientation toward helping others and contributing positively to the world. Among other things.

I was scrolling to see if it was here :(

1) Reese, I love the quips
2) I guess If-Then-Else although I prefer to be a contrarian in general
3) Zoe

Also, I find a bit of morbid humor in the framing of this argument around sovereignty, since that is exactly what the revisionist "Lost Cause" faction in the South tries to argue caused the Civil War. (It did not.)

It wasn't the indigenous people that rose up against England, it was immigrants from England and various European states. So yes, they were something reasonably close to voluntary subjects.

Yeah, the EU's powers are closer to the (much weaker) federal powers under the Articles of Confederation (although a bit weaker than that even, I think). Which failed, for some of the reasons that the EU is struggling with of late. But a Brexit is a bit of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Ouch. The announcement that the DC date was canceled happened literally while I had the app open to call an Uber to go to it, so… still a little raw.

[Raises hand] I am curious what you have to say.

That record is a great way to learn to sing harmony, because Kiedis and Frusciante have such different voices and they're both really high in the mix, so it's really easy to pick apart the parts.

AV Club posted a terrible Hatesong yesterday with Big Jay Oakerson hating on Seal, it had a bunch of racist garbage in it, it was unceremoniously pulled and as best I can tell they still haven't posted an editorial note about doing so.
