It's not that they were considered 'not white', but they (along with Italians & other southern europeans) were regarded as very different . Up until the second world war, immigration to Australia was essentially entirely Anglo-Celtic, so the arrival of the "wogs" in the post-war period was a big change.
This book/series' exploration of the tensions in modern multicultural Australia is on par with "Crash"'s dissection of racism in L.A.
You won't find it in a peer reviewed publication, or any publication not put out by wally donuts, because it is not true.
