I was urged into Malazan by a friend, and kept telling him how I was hating the first book. It gets so much better. If you can stick with it, it's great stuff from the second book on.

Alpha Centauri is definitely one of my favorites. Check out Dominions 3, though, if you haven't checked out that series before. It's very complex, as all the best TBS's are, but it's all worth it.
