Except he didn't call them un-insightful, he called them xenophobic.
Except he didn't call them un-insightful, he called them xenophobic.
Not necessarily - it depends on the claim. Xenophobia is already widely understood to be destructive, misguided, backwards, etc etc. Do we really need the reviewer to go David Brent on us and start explaining to us why racism is bad? The reader either knows that already, or disagrees strongly enough that they wouldn't…
It's kind of defensive to take away from this review that you "should" do anything. The reviewer is just giving his take. It comes down to how much you're affected by lyrics - I couldn't listen to any of my favourite albums if the lyrics were replaced by sincerely-meant racism, religious proselytising, or the like
The AV Club isn't really the place to go into that in depth, it's an entertainment website
…and then contracted the statements on the stand
Mine too. Didn't understand the hype around Mick Ronson before I heard this. Loads of brilliant guitar breaks. Bowie-meets-early-Sabbath production. Lots of darkness and no extroversion, all his flamboyance here just comes out twisted and crazy.
My money's on Morrissey
You're at the cinema to see a movie and it sucks. Do you waste your money by leaving, or waste your time by staying?
It is.
I ended up thinking the Onion article "Website's Built-In Search Engine Just Pathetic" was probably about their own sister site
I never got Numberwang. Seemed like a not-funny filler sketch repeated endlessly. Except the Numberwang documentary, that was class
If we're playing the whole 'they were better when' game, who remembers Comedy Nation??
Their Channel 4 series was awesome, I'm not so much a fan of the newer BBC episodes although those RAF pilots are classic
The Manics did a good rip off of this - Journal For Plague Lovers. Great song
In the days of Napster when you had to pirate CDs one song at a time, my copy of Hendrix's Are You Experienced inadvertently ended up with a random cover of Foxy Lady on it, rather than the original - something I failed to realise until playing the album with a friend in the room, to whom I shared the observation that…
I didn't realise it either. To be fair, it's a different use of that voice - those big stagy laughs are totally unlike anything Frasier would do
Vaguely similar - Lester Bangs did a fictitious piece about the 60's garage band the Count Five, who made one album and split up. It was a fantasy history where they'd gone on to do concept albums and all kinds of stuff, and I wasted time trying to find that stuff, even though he basically admits that "sometimes I…
When I was 4-5 I used to think whenever we watched a video, that meant that the people in the film had to reconvene somewhere and act it out afresh for our convenience. I came to this conclusion when we watched a Herbie movie for the second time and one actor delivered a line in a totally different way to how I…
Mine was not noticing the pun in the name of the singer Sandie Shaw.
I would go with Steve Coogan's Tommy Saxondale. I've applied for so many shitty jobs over the years, and never once have I ended up sat in someone's garage being interviewed by an avuncular former roadie who would actually complement me for turning up in a Nirvana t-shirt instead of asking where my tie was. He's…
