Craig (and anyone else who liked "Songs From the Second Floor") -

Love Her
Varda's "The Gleaners and I" is, like Robertson Davies' books, an example of work that makes me feel better about getting old.

"i'll fall into the first of the camps" - unfortunate choice of words after mentioning "Night and Fog."

Holy crap! There's a new John Crowley novel! Man, that's like waking up on Christmas morning, as far as I'm concerned!

Is that in "Aegypt" or "Love and Sleep?" I thought that storyline (and it is an odd one) didn't come in until the second book.

"Aegypt" might make more sense as a book-club pick. It's shorter, more conventionally structured and is about reading and books (along with a lot of other things).

Who dares speak ill of erotica?

I'm sure you could get Bloom to do a follow-up interview regarding "Little, Big." He's said it's one of his favorite books.

You should - the book has a very satisfying ending that…nevermind. I'll wait for the discussion.

I also didn't care for it the first time I saw it, for the reasons people have listed here: what seemed like gratuitous cruelty and the long single shot scenes. It didn't help that I saw it on The Sundance Channel, which followed the movie with a brief interview excerpt with Haneke in which he expressed amazement

This is becoming like the pre-taped phone in show.

Maybe she was working on it when she spoke to Palahniuk, but has since abandoned the project.

Whatever Oprah wants, Oprah gets.

Great choice
I just read this a couple of years ago and I'm not going to be able to re-read, but I'm really looking forward to the discussion.

One of the worst films in the English language
Granted, a bit of hyperbole, but not by much. I remember at the time critics were giving this film an indulgent pass, whereas they were endlessly berating David Lynch's flawed yet vastly superior "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me."

There is a "Best of Dave Allen" on dvd in Britain. I watched it recently - it's not bad. It made me smile more than laugh, though I did laugh out loud a couple of time. It's main appeal was nostalgic. It reminded me of listening to my father laugh any time Allen discussed being a Catholic.

Danrimage -

These responses prove that "Wrapped Up In Books" is a great feature.

When Geek Love Was Published
I also read "Geek Love" when it came out and much of my affection for it has to do with how different it seemed from mainstream fiction in the late 1980s. The characters, the setting, the odd language (particularly in the opening section of the book), the skewered morality all seemed so

You're right. The script is great. It was co-written by George Toles, as were many of Maddin's other great films: Archangel, Brand Upon The Brain, My Winnipeg.
