There is an element here that has not been looked at.  The Vampire ability to suppress their own emotions.  ie, Voluntarily become a sociopath.  Damon, for most of season 1 was switched off.  Elena's influence plays a large part in reconnecting him with his humanity.  A lot of what we've seen of Damon's "change" over
