Parenthood does tend to stick to a very give/take approach in their storytelling. I'd bet money Ryan flames out spectacularly to balance out Kristina surviving.

I think what they're waiting for is for Mark's long-lost, previously unknown daughter to show up and trash their relationship, freeing Sarah to ricochet into Hank's arms for a whirlwind, ill-conceived marriage that will slowly deflate into an anti-climactic divorce before Rory's send-off party makes Mark and Sarah

I would actually really love a scene where Amber reads Sarah the riot act regarding her behavior, because right now Amber is streets ahead of Sarah in the maturity department.

The problem I'm having is they have to retard the character's development in order to get them to into this plot. At this point in the relationship Mark should be more comfortable with Sarah than the always-twitchy yes-man he is right now, and Sarah DID NOT HAVE TO CAT CRAWL UP HANK'S BED TO TAKE HIS GLASSES OFF,

I thought so, too! I was like, "Have I not been paying attention, how did they avoid a whole story line about cousins running against each other in school?" The would be a great future plot, though, just for the Julia v. Kristina campaign manager rivalry.
