I definitely think its a voting-related problem. Even in season 2, where the now out of the closet Travis and Benji were the finalists, I remember there always being personal footage where their sexual preference would never be addressed directly.

I don't know about the "doing nothing for their careers" part, though. There's been like 3 'alumni' f rom SYTYCD on Dancing with the Stars, where having danced other styles can help them add flashy moves that win votes or for the 'freestyle' dance near the end of the competition.
