He was an actor first, then a novelty pop singer. He's returned to the day job in Game of Thrones, and to describe him just as a pop singer isn't really fair. He did masses of acting jobs before, and after Soldier Soldier, but that gave him his big break.

Beijing was soulless, robotic, an ode to the state. Boyle's ceremony was chaotic, eccentric and celebrated the individual. Beijing's was all about artifice - a faked little photogenic girl lip synching and CGI fireworks; Boyle's was all about keeping it real. Some things went wrong but it didn't matter.
