This made me laugh for six solid minutes.

Got to go with Crimson Tide as his best. I love True Romance but CT is just a perfect engine of a film; there isn't an ounce of fat on it anywhere.

Mediocre artists incapable of conveying a genuine emotional truth resort to 'shocking' extremity to try and create undue notoriety for themselves. You're not supposed to question its validity, because of how 'brave' they're being, when actually all they're being is tedious and trite. Seen it a thousand times.

Me too!

Tell you what else I'd add as a subtle example of this: Pan's Labyrinth. All through the film Del Toro is really careful to never confirm whether the fantasy elements are 'real' or if the little girl is just retreating into hallucinations. The ending lets you choose whichever option you're more inclined to believe.
