What gave you this idea that Gordon-Levitt is this manic high-wire actor, unable to tone it down? In "Mysterious Skin", he was pretty much the epitome of cool-and-detached charisma hiding a darker past. Or, shit, "The Lookout".

In addition to the hoodrat kid and "Halloween", I'm pretty certain that the dog-killing scene and when they were throwing shit off of the bridge were references to the murderous Macauley Culkin flick "The Good Son". Maybe even the finale where Lamilton gets dropped.
