Well the Entertainment Weekly article (http://www.ew.com/ew/articl… explains it pretty well… Wiseau didn't create the cult or the word of mouth and it's pretty obvious (at least to me) that he rented the theaters. Which is something that anyone can do, it's just a really stupid way of getting a movie out there,

Well, he did shoot simultaneously on DV and 35 mm because he was supposedly unaware of which one was better. Plus the green screen shots ain't cheap. Plus he rented billboards in the heart of Hollywood. AND, I would bet he paid the theaters to show it. I don't see how else an obviously terrible self-financed film
