I definitely see your points on a lot of that (the Valentine's plot is a continuation of the really terrible love triangle/square/whatever that really detracts from the show as a whole).

Focusing on the news more than the soap opera nonsense definitely made this episode a lot better than the rest (and a tremendous step up from last week's awful episode).
