I think you really have to take Satriani out of it. The writer/typist analogy is a very apt there: He's like a guy who can type 200 words a minute but couldn't write an original sentence if you put a gun to his head.

If you think Community is mediocre, what do you think is good? 
Personally, I think it's one of the most creative, consistent, adventurous comedies television has ever produced, and Harmon's firing will almost certainly destroy the show.

There's been a few of these when sitcoms try to do punk rock. I think the most egregious example was on Just Shoot Me, when the Serious Artist photographer was really excited to shoot his Serious Musician idol. This would have been fine, had he not gone on to perform his "profound" masterpiece, "Head Full of Nails."
