i think the reason they made that character such a douche is so we wouldn't feel too sorry for all the abuse he suffers at the hands of Chris.

a lot of the violence in this show is completely unrealistic.. remember the time Paulie's goons beat down the principal with like a whole school full of witnesses? No way they wouldn't get arrested for that in real life.
