And throughout the course of the series it's always been Ted in the future telling his kids the story of how he met their mother yet…

Didn't the mother seem somewhat melancholy when Ted left and she said that she would be waiting right there? I'm getting a 6th sense vibe here. I think I see what the writers are setting up.
