I think you're absolutely right. Season 2 had a structure that didn't just pop up out of nowhere. A lot of the Season 2 plotlines are actually well done, because a lot of the place-setting is done for them in late Season 1.

Even then, even if I believed her backstory; this is a character who is clearly, woefully underqualified both naturally (unlike say, Michael, who had an innate flair for the work) and in terms of any sort of training or theoretical grounding.
