Ehh, if there's one thing Korra is emphatically not, it's cowardly.  If Korra really wanted to die, she would have killed herself without hesitation, and everyone else would just have to deal with it.

But her not wanting to die shows that she realizes her life has value beyond being the avatar.  That's still a breakthrough, even if she does still hate her life, because it shows that she realizes that she isn't "nothing" without her bending.
