It would have been close to perfect to me, if they had kept the original ending. My disgust at that change pretty much ruined the whole thing for me.

I'd have to agree with you. It's not to downgrade Hannibal, but True Detective had the feel of a Hannibal/Wire hybrid, that hit the spot amazingly for me.

I'll say, while the episode was good, there were times when I just wanted them to be done with the whole Mason affair, and return to the Will and Hannibal scenes.
