IMHO, he cares for Jesse because he's his prize pupil.  After 10+ years of teaching high school chemistry where large numbers of the students are there because they have to be, he finally has one who shows a little enthusiasm for the subject, whom he can lecture to at will and ad nauseam, and who seems to be learning…

Why are we wasting time with the shenanigans in Miami Metro?  I just read that Showtime has signed Scott Buck for a Dexter spin-off: some deluded soul apparently thinks we're interested in watching a Dexter-less series with the same basic cast.
