Well I think they said the flu was so brutal that basically everyone got the vaccine.

I thought it was actually that the flu was so bad for the humans that a larger majority of the population got vaccinated, and feeding on the vaccinated people is what actually made the vampires sick (a side effect of the vaccine, not the flu).  I did think that was pretty clever though.
