It's not anything like Quidditch. They're not supposed to hit each other with the balls, that's why the game quickly devolves. Although the gameplay is wildly different, I likened Eschaton to Battle School in Ender's Game, if only for the kids-playing-war aspect, and because it was so amusing to read.
