Conan was a very iffy proposition for the first few years of his show. And hey, since Casey's character partly references Craig Kilborn, who left ESPN in 1996 to host The Daily Show, it's not exactly a huge flight of fancy.

I didn't mean "odd" in the sense of "rare and therefore difficult to wrap one's mind around," even though that's the way the commander meant it. Two differing claims to absolute universal validity forming an alliance with each other is epistemologically odd, despite how practical it proves to be.

Oh, not saying that the dissenting sects always get the best of it (the way Christianity eventually did, after a few centuries),. Far from it. But they do give their overlords a lot of trouble both politically and philosophically, and thoughtful observers can't help seeing the dissonance.
