I came to the series long before the video game era.  My introduction to Bond was a Corgi produced miniature Astin-Martin "Goldfinger" car with revolving license plates, machine guns that popped out of the front, blades you could pull out of the real tires, and an ejector seat that shot out a dude in a blue suit with

And if the Rutgers experience was anything like what happened at USC in '92, the school probably paid a hefty fee to be insulted.  Although he is a singular and important filmmaker, generosity hasn't been his strong suit.

You hit the nail on the head.  Most of Lee's films can be appreciated when conventional ideas about tone, narrative, design and performance are relaxed and you just let the images and sound flow on their own terms, A good grasp on the history of cinema (and photography) aesthetics can be illuminating as well.

My reaction was rather uncharacteristically strong, but your post just rubbed a rather sore spot that I've had with certain professional critics concerning directors whose dark visions I admire.  None of the directors mentioned in this thread strike me as being explicitly misanthropic, and that this common

Great point about Demy and the overt theatricality of Lee's style. In evaluating Lee's films, one often has to abandon preconceptions that the narrative, performance, and tone will cohere, and just go with experiencing the flow of the sound and images.  Then again, when those elements come together in MALCOLM X, DO THE RIGHT THING, or INSIDE MAN, you have to consider that he's too

Fundamentalism's interpretation of what is Biblically ordained has always been a fluid concept.  In its more recent campaigns involving abortion and homosexuality, the Republican Party has replaced Hays Code era Hollywood as the cultural institution designed to teach Protestants how to be more Catholic.

Gotta disagree here.  Polanski's cinematic language links the viewers intake of visual and aural information, to an uncomfortable degree, to the perspective of the protagonist.  His staging of screen space creates the same effect as Hitchcock, albeit with different techniques.  The point of view embedded in Polanski's

Seeing that the going rate for a successful franchise sequel with similar special effects and star power is about $250 million, In the scheme of things its fairly frugal.
