I find that the quality of a movie is inversely proportional to how much advertising time it receives.

I think you're pretty much dead on. The screen time that they've had in the Pacific, they've wasted. Every thing that is done on screen should serve at least one of these purposes, and even better two: plot, action, characterization, or atmosphere.
