There is a mystery to the show. It's never satisfactorily explained. But I think that's due less to the writers not having an explanation for it than it not being the point.

Plot holes: you forgot to mention the prudish morality of watching the shower tapes. I'd assume you would watch the Tabula Rasa's all the time, ala Clonus or The Prisoner, and have a whole team of people that looked for the slightest signs. Especially after the Alpha Incident.

I think Topher—and the rest, probably—are all Dolls themselves. Therefore, anyone can be Topher simply by plugging in the right personality.

I flashed on Clonus too. That's enough of us that it's probably no coincidence—there may have been that exact scene in Clonus, or something, for all of us to remember it.
