I started reading a Harry Turtledove book about a future America where people take vacations in ancient Rome. Didn't make it very far. It's one of those books where the garish cover art pretty much broadcasts the quality of writing.
Hatin: Unless the woman in question is a geek. A girl geek.
Kurosawa—good point. I'd never looked into this before. The most baffling thing is I didn't realize foreign films were eligible for Best Feature. If they are, that throws open the doors for many, many other years when Oscar bait won over a classic foreign film.
Favorite Nic Cage "acting" moments
I remember being floored by how unrelentingly depressing Leaving Las Vegas was the first time I saw it. That made my favorite scene all the more jarring: A soused Cage falls backward on to a glass table. He's helped up, with bloody shards sticking out of his back, and screams "WHOO!…
I think we can safely say this man deserves a Random Roles.
I played Uncharted Waters 2 for the Genesis and remember loving it, although I was never much good at trading (wasn't much fun, either). It was a good way to earn money early in the game so that you could hire a decent crew and get the fuck out of the Mediterranean.
That was entertaining for about five minutes…
…but it was a hell of a five minutes. Love when we get reviews of these weird little indie games.
No more re-runs, please
Is Totally for Teens not going to be aired, then? The clips on YouTube looked promising.
I was actually really disappointed with this one. The story sounded cool and a little Cronenbergian, and I dug that. But then I cracked it and actually found it kind of dull. I haven't read it in a while, though, so maybe I need to revisit that.
The Filth was the first Grant Morrison comic I got into, and it was a hell of a place to start. But the problem with Morrison is he goes batshit crazy coming up with ideas without really having enough of a story (or character development) to support them. I went from the The Filth to Animal Man (which was good but not…

PhonyPope—no, that's Cutthroat Island. Pirates stars Walter Matthau. Apparently the kids didn't like him as a pirate as much as they do Johnny Depp.
I was actually a little curious about Pirates—has anyone seen it? Or is the fact that there doesn't seem to be a copy left anywhere on Earth suggest that no review is necessary?
Bug creeped me the fuck out. I loved how it started as what could be a very quiet (if obviously unhealthy) romance, then quickly grows increasingly claustrophobic and batshit insane.
My *only* exposure to this guy before this interview was seeing him on Maher once in a while, he's never been anything less than cringe-inducing. He sounds like he might know what he's talking about, but he also comes off as that really awkward uncle of yours who tries really, really hard to be funny.
I think you're right that there's nothing deep about what Cohen is doing with any of his characters. It's basically just schadenfreude, mixed with a lot of awkward humor, and I think most people understand that.
Where to go next…
I somehow think that if Chris Morris and Sacha Baron Cohen were to link up after this, wonderful things could happen.
I'd say the Moonwalker game, and more importantly, the Moonwalker movie—which I still have on VHS—defined the man for me. I remember spending many hours fast-forwarding through that tape just to watch the animated segments of Moonwalker. And to see Michael blow up Joe Pesci.
That's personal question, actually.
So who wants to speculate on what a Friday night is like for Tommy Wiseau?
