It's fucking amazing that Dennis Duffy and Leo Spaceman—two straight-up phenomenal characters—were introduced in back-to-back episodes. Lesser sitcoms would kill for that kind of early track record.
He sort of duplicated the effect when Liz tells him she has "like, 12 grand in checking," and Jack responds, "Are you an immigrant?"
That was one of them. Also: "No, sir, I didn't see you playing with your dolls!" And jamming the radar. And the final battle between Lone Starr and Dark Helmet. And the entire scene where Dark Helmet gets the combo to the air shield. And the "beam me up" bit. Pretty much every other scene.
My mom decided she wanted to watch Pulp Fiction because I kept raving about it. She doesn't care for violence or cursing, so…did not enjoy.
My mom was a good sport about my love of Spaceballs, but she did constantly say, "This movie is so stupid!" as we watched it.
They're still unable to swallow their pride and maybe learn a thing or two.
It really does look bad. John Mulaney is funny. Martin Short is funny. Nasim Pedrad is funny. Elliott Gould is funny. But somehow, this show looks unfunny. I'm gonna give it a shot based on the cast, but I don't exactly have high hopes.
I think the deal was that he wasn't always an asshole, but at some point during Growing Pains, he became a god-bothering dickhead and basically tried to insist that everybody else be a god-bothering dickhead, too, which led to the actress getting fired and him basically alienating everybody because honestly, who wants…
