Sure, I agree completly with that final point. To me he's always been sort of hit and miss, but with the hits outweighing the misses.
Looking at his last few release for example:
Duma Key: Just found it boring and forgettable.
Under The Dome: Didn't care for it, but opinons vary.

Just to very briefly be a voice of dissent, I love the super deep canon stuff and I still love Marissa Wompler.

You enjoyed Under The Dome that much? It just felt far too overly long to me, and then at the end just completly fell apart. I thought those last hundred pages are so are dreadful. Though, I may have been unfair saying it's one of his worst, it was at least easly superior to the later Mr. Mercedes
