Could someone explain what late 60s psycho/social fad was being skewered by inclusion of the Ethan from Lost guy? Does he represent the beginning of the spread of 70s "flake" culture?

Totally agree with Todd about the cheapness of using the sex slave thing as a throwaway story element. I was much more intrigued when I thought it was all a projection in Norman's head. Making it "real" left a bad taste, and didn't seem to flow at all with Shelby's character.
