For the record, I have a huge amount of respect for YA literature in general and recognize that one of the best American books of the past century—The Catcher in the Rye—pretty much kick-started the genre. I never said it couldn't be complex; I just meant you can't criticize an author for not doing something she

@avclub-401f66b5b93edd22fc42055d09ff5425:disqus You're right, I would be doing those books a disservice if that was what I said.

I agree that Collins' writing is cringe-worthy at times, but I'm not sure you picked very good examples of it. I'd say it's on par with J.K. Rowling circa HP1—not great, but it's something you overlook in order to enjoy the plot.

None of my kids watches Community. I have failed as a teacher.

@avclub-a9dbf6c70f867fb5d09900f7bab79c25:disqus Agreed. It's true that they don't spend a lot of time on the moral implications of Katniss killing the District 1 boy, but it's pretty heavily implied that it's something that will haunt her forever.

It's a good joke.

@avclub-a8cf86b7e95be74b1204e22a9aab9cd0:disqus No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that book doesn't really attempt to be literary, so why critique it on those grounds?

@avclub-e0135f54a1f8cc91f4bd43ee4e64b6e4:disqus  As a high-school teacher, I can't deny that students like you are obviously the ideal—but you and I both know that you are different from your peers. And I agree with you, the book IS fun to read.

I don't disagree with this point at all. I have actually had impassioned arguments against teaching The Hunger Games over Animal Farm. Collins' novel doesn't have a ton of substance, so it wouldn't benefit them much. But TestTubeMonkey is correct—some of these students have ridiculously low lexile scores, and I can't

You make good points, but here are some rebuttals.

So you picked up a young adult book and apparently were so turned off by the horrible writing that it was just beyond your ability to finish? Have you ever considered that the book wasn't written with a well-read adult in mind for its audience (although you can't be that well-read if you're expecting a book that's

Can't help but feel like you botched this a bit…

Homeland's first season was filmed in NC too.

I am commenting on an article about comments.

I've been super excited for it ever since I heard the title track a few months back, and now the reviews are (almost) making me wish I had listened to the leak. Can't wait to stop by my local record store and pick it up on the way home from work.

Hm… if Boy is from 2010, why is this review being published now? Is it finally getting a wide release in America? If so, is there any information to be found about where it will be shown?

I think I would have agreed with you about it being top-heavy the first few times I listened to the album, but it really started to grow on me. Side B has at least 4 excellent songs.

I watched most of Cheers' first season when I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown over the massive amount of work I was doing as a student teacher. I still say someone can't understand how perfect Cheers is unless he/she watches it under a tremendous amount of stress. The theme song always struck such a chord with
