I think the movie is mediocre-to-pretty-good and is pushed over the top by the casting for Benvolio and Mercutio. Just spot-on casting and very fun roles. The whole movie is just loads of fun.

Just going to go ahead and out myself as a philistine: I really, really dig the Baz Luhrmann version and find it endlessly watchable.
