Probably because Jesus wasn't the first person to say "forgive your enemies" or "give to the poor". I don't know of anything he said that was particularly groundbreaking. These notions have been around since well before Jesus lived. So the only reason to follow him is for the dogma.

In general, I think religion should be treated like sports. Root for whoever you want, but don't take it too seriously. Reasonable people might think you're strange for not liking sports, but they don't think you're "wrong".
