Yep! I noticed that too. I'm surprised that such an important point was subtly thrown in, especially for a show which usually loves to shove ideas down your throat. Just another point of evidence to show that the show is actually taking steps to get better at writing.

I thought Sam jumping in on the chanting was great too because it showed how non-threatening he found Jess and Nick's relationship to be. He wouldn't encourage them to kiss if he was worried about their relationship. It shows that, really, the only people that know of their chemistry is Jess and Nick and the viewers.
