I remember watching Barry Adamson play a show in Sydney a few years ago, and when he announced the next song would be their last, some jackass threw a plastic glass at him. It missed his head by a few centimetres; he didn't even flinch—merely raised an eyebrow. 'Hmm. Tetchy,' he murmured.

Imagine being a grown man, and having to stand in a room in front of other adult men and women, and utter the line “Once we hit Secret Wars #1, there is no Marvel Universe, Ultimate Universe, or any other. It’s all Battleworld!”—and not feel ashamed of how your life has turned out.

Just one of the greatest (and most prescient) things ever made.

Hey, if it's good enough for Alexander Pope …

'Overtop of …' Really?

Good piece, though I'm not sure I agree with your central thesis. Ceylan's win (which personally, I thought a terrific choice) never seemed a foregone conclusion. In fact, for most of the critics I know and hung around with there, this was actually the most wide-open Cannes in almost a decade; no one had a clue what

I get that he doesn't 'do' irony, but considering the Black Lips' achievements to date, for this idiot to call any other artist out for being 'kind of mediocre' strikes me as pretty fucking funny.

Seth looks like an evil Jason Bateman.

'Based on an unpublished Frank Miller comic' … mmm. Doesn't THAT phrase just whet the appetite?

Let's not use 'othering' as a verb, shall we? Or as a word, for that matter, since it's not.

I disagree with the 'dont' act like idiots' part, since this is one of those SF films where every character, at every moment, takes care to do the stupidest possible thing in order to advance the plot.

Surely it's more about cloaking the issue for the benefit of his very different (i.e., heavily Latino) American fanbase, no?

It says something about Veena Sud, I think, that in the opening credits, every actor's first name is in normal lower-case font, and their family name is in bold caps. But when her name comes up as series creator? ALL BOLD, ALL CAPS. A small thing – but telling.

Yep. It's all terrific – and all very, very dark. But 'White Bear' … holy shit.

'In On the Kill Taker' is an untouchable masterpiece.

Yep. Shit song, but kind of definitive.

As a friend of mine in Paris noted, she's so humourless and brittle than even French actresses find her hard work. I met her once and almost got frostbite.

Beautifully shot, AV Club. That's some fine-ass cinematography right there.

I hear you, CR; it's baffling. And frankly, to hear a critic (Heisler) complaining about this, is to witness someone who needs to have their shoes laced for them in the morning.

Seriously, how hard is it to buy a region-free DVD player? Or to hack the one you've already got? It takes, with Googling, about four minutes of your time.
