@avclub-fe401f7f1b2e5a82e7046b1a07488673:disqus Dude, bro, I don't want to get into a fruitless recounting of human history, but the show's portrayal of human reactions to the situation has been deeply unrealistic.

And for those of you that read this and shit kittens because I insulted deviant art/the DCAU/comics or something else close to your heart, please stop shitting kittens immediately. It's bad for your asshole, and even worse for the kittens.

Whether they're borrowing from Batman, or other comics, or cyberpunk (a genre I happen to enjoy, in other settings) or deviantart AZN steampunk, the point is that all of these are vastly inferior visual and plot references than the human history that made up the basis of ATLA.

Between the mecha tanks, the electric gloves, the secret lairs under mansions, the sorta-batmobile and two super-villains in disguise (Tarlokk and Amon) they're really going down the comic book/DCAU/superhero route.

Doh! You're right about the narration. Still, doesn't change my point in the least.

I haven't read the fifth yet, because I try not to waste that much time on anything that demands sobriety. That description is almost too shitty to believe. Especially since, as anyone who has been on either of a good fuck can tell you, it's usually very apparent where you end and the other human begins.

@avclub-edefdcf46bf545ec653aaa1fd27eb181:disqus Total airball on my part. It's been awhile since I read them, now I realize it was really the fourth book that did me in. The third has signs of trouble, but at least shit was still moving well.

You might be the first person I've met who enjoyed the third book more than the first two, and that might indicate a pretty fundamental difference between our tastes. Which, hey, is quite alright. It's not like they feed us less if we disagree.

It's kind of incredible how much better the show has been so far in comparison to the books. A sometimes overlooked fact about the books is that they are very, very badly written.
